| A Calorie-Free Way to Enjoy Christmas Cookies! |
One of my most special memories growing up was making Christmas Sugar Cookies with my family! We had so much fun mixing, rolling, and decorating the sweet, delicate cookies. Mom would put sugar into an old clean jar and drop food coloring in, and we would shake it until all the sugar turned a beautiful color! I remember the tips of our small fingers turned bright colors from sprinkling the sugar on all the cookies!
Since I live far away from all of my beautiful family, I am so thankful for these special memories of childhood~this quilt is for you! Thank-you Mom, Dad, Doug, Cheryl, Wayne, Cindy, and to my Wonderful Husband James who gives me special Christmas memories now!
Materials List
1 yard green cotton print
1 yard red cotton print
3/4 yard cotton fabric for borders
Scraps of small cotton prints about 5-inch squares for cookies
Scraps of cotton batting for cookies
Cotton batting 60 x 50 inches for quilt
Cotton fabric for back 60 x 50 inches
Cotton fabric for binding
Fabric dye sticks for details on faces and buttons
Optional red ribbon for Teddy Bear Bow
1. Cut green and red fabric into 6-1/2 inch strips.
2. Cut strips into 6-1/2 inch squares.
3. For a total of 48 blocks~ 24 red and 24 green

4. Use provided patterns to trace cookies onto wrong side of fabric.
5. Make cookie sandwich~5 to 5-1/2 inch square cotton batting on bottom, then square of fabric, right side up on top of batting, finally piece of fabric you drew cookie pattern on, wrong side up. You should have a nice little square sandwich. The batting between give the cookies a nice little lift on the finished quilt.
6. Pin all four corners to hold cookie sandwich together.
7. Set up machine with matching thread and stitch on line using a small stitch, leave a one inch opening to turn.
8. Trim 1/8 inch from stitching, clip in corners.
9. Turn right side out and press tucking in open edge.
10. Use fabric dye sticks to color in details for Snowman, Gingerbread man, Teddy Bear, and Santa. Follow manufacturers directions to make this design permanent.
11. Center cookies on each fabric square and edge stitch in place.
12. Arrange squares alternating red and green. When your happy with the placement, sew together.
13. Cut 3-1/2 inch strips from border fabric, sew to sides and then top and bottom.
14. Layer backing, batting then cookie top, and pin in place.
15. Stitch through all layers around cookies (so they puff up)and then quilt blocks and borders as desired.
16. Bind quilt.

Cookie Patterns
Christmas Sugar Cookies
(not so low calorie version)
Ingredients
1-1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
1 cup butter
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Directions
Cream sugar and butter. Mix in egg and flavorings.
Blend in dry ingredients.
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Divide dough in half and roll out onto lightly floured board.
Cut out with your favorite cookie cutters and place on parchment covered cookie sheets.
Sprinkle with colorful sugar.
Bake 7 to 10 minutes, cool on racks.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful quilt. This is my first christmas without my mom. She passed away last year. So there has been alot of remember this remember that happening in my house. Seeing your quilt made me smile, it's something my mom would have had us tackle in a heart beat. I can remember so many years of making cookies just like this. The big deal was when we got the cookie gun, do you remember those, you would change the little disc and out came the shape. But ultimately decorating and cutting out our cookies was always the most fun.. Thank you so much for sharing the directions, this will definately go on the future projects list.

Hi Patty, Thank you! I am so sorry for your loss. I also understand; I lost my sister and Dad within 6 months last year. I have reverted to so many of my child hood memories to cope. I get my comfort and peace through creating things in fabric. I hope you can make this quilt and find the same comfort I have found.

I know this is a very old post but I had to comment. This is so special. I made a stuffed wreath with animals on it. I stuffed each one and stitched around them. I still use it. I will be making one of your Sugar Cookie quilts. It is unique. Thank you for bringing back warm memories of my son & I making sugar cookies every year when he was little. Merry Christmas!

I am so glad this quilt brings back warm memories for you with you and your son making cookies, that is just the reason I created this quilt...memories of my childhood baking with my Mom and brothers and sisters, and being a Mom and making cookies with my children.
