Gardening and Donuts Mug Rug for Mom

My Mom decided she wanted me to make a mug rug for her for Mother's Day. I asked her what she wanted and she replied whatever you want to do, you know my favorite colors! Which are purples and pinks. 
I decided to make this rug 2-sided, gardening for the front, one of Mom's favorite warm weather pastimes, and donuts on the back, one of her favorites treats! Especially Coconut! She will never refuse a stop at Dunkin Donuts!
I even stuck her cat "Petu" in the corner.

Which came first? The Mug or the Rug?

For me I usually find the mugs first, and then design my rug around the mug. I like to add special unique touches, thinking outside the box.
When I was working on a rug one day I wrote this poem especially for these cuties!

I'm a mug rug, cute and sweet;

just enough room for a drink and a treat!

If you happen to drip, or drop a crumb;

gently wash me by hand so....... 

I'll be ready when snack time comes!

BABY BURP TOWEL

This cute burp towel is fast and easy to whip up in no time! Great for a baby shower gift! 

Measures about 24 inches by 11 inches in the middle

(12 inches on the ends)

                                                                                  

Materials

1/2 yard of terry cotton toweling

1/2 yard cotton fabric for ruffle

Glue stick

Pins

Store-bought appliques or cut your own from fabric

Helpful but not necessary ~ Ruffler foot

This ruffler attachment is great to have if you make lots of ruffles.

1. Scroll to the bottom of this entry, click on the pattern to download and print. Cut out. Lay out terry toweling and fold in half. Raw edges should be at the top. Place straight edge of pattern on fold. Pin and cut out. Make two of these.

2.Open up towels and lay out. At this point, you can add your own touch. You can use store-bought appliques or cut out cute bears, stars, rattles, flowers or whatever you like.
Keep it simple, you want the babies face to be touching the nice soft towel not a bunch of appliques.

I used a butterfly I cut from fabric and 3 small bees.

3. I positioned these appliques near one of the bottom edges.

I love using applique pins to hold small fabric pieces in place.







For really small pieces, like my bees, use a dab of glue stick.

4. Hand stitch or free motion stitch applique pieces in place, using clear or matching thread.

5. Take the cotton print, and fold in half (selvage edges at top) and cut 3-6inch strips.

6.With right sides together, pin ends together and sew 1/4 inch seam, attach other strip in the same way, until you have one long strip.

7. Press seams open.

8. Fold over each end 1/4 inch, then 1/4 inch again. Press in place and stitch.

9. Fold strip in half, wrong sides together and press. This makes a 3-wide, long strip, right sides out.

10. Hand or machine-baste 1/4 inch from raw edge

11. Ruffle edges using ruffler foot or using a long stitch sew 1/4 inch from edge. 

12. Pull up threads and cut, leaving long thread tails to pull to make the gathers.

13. Sew 1/4 inch from previous stitching. At the end, pulling up threads again. *Make sure when you are sewing second line of stitching, have previous thread tails pulled out of the way.

14. Pull up thread tails and evenly distribute gathers from end to end, do not tie off threads, wrap around a pin, so you can do final adjustments.

15. Start pinning ruffle to right side middle edge. Raw edges of ruffle aligned with towel edge.Overlap ends about 1 inch.

16. Hand or machine baste in place, and remove all pins.

17. Place back piece on top of front with right sides together, sandwiching ruffle in the middle. Pin in place,leaving an opening on one side about 4-1/2 inches long.

18. Stitch all the layers together with a 5/8 inch seam. You don't have to clip any curves.

19. Turn right side out through opening.

20. Slipstitch opening closed.
